Sisters and Fresh Café co-owners since 2007, the Watsons continue to brighten the Winnipeg food scene with their healthy, locally-sourced slow fare.
I’m currently reading Hoodoo Sea by Rolf Hitzer, a local author. While I’m not an avid science fiction reader, it was suggested that I read this book. It’s about a NASA test flight that goes missing in the Bermuda Triangle and the dangers the crew encounter once they land. I’m loving its fast pace and the Manitoban references I identify with, like the log cabin in Bird Lake, the area where I, as well as the main character spent much of my summers.
I’ve just read: The Zahir by Paulo Coelho, and was deeply moved. It follows the narrator’s spiritual journey to find his estranged wife and himself, along the way. His zahir, meaning his obsession, gave me a different perspective on people, love and relationships. I’ve moved onto another one of Coelho’s books, The Witch of Portobello.
Next on my night table: A Year of Food Life: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, with Steven L. Hopp and Camille Kingsolver. It’s about a family’s attempt to eat only locally grown foods for an entire year. As a restaurant owner who supports local farmers, I’m sure this book will inspire me to try even harder in both my business and family’s eating.
